A Vanderbilt University Basketball Player From Haiti Learned English by Listening to George Strait Songs

There’s a player on the Vanderbilt University basketball team named Djery Baptiste who was born in Haiti, but didn’t learn to speak English until he started listening to country music.  (His first name is pronounced “Jerry.”)

He tells “The Tennessean”, quote, “I was in America and didn’t know how to say anything in the language, but I thought I could learn it through music.  Country music was the best for me, and GEORGE STRAIT is my favorite.

“I learned how to speak English by listening to him tell stories in his songs.  It’s just his voice and his tone that I love.”  His favorite George song is Check Yes or No because it reminds him of his “formative years” in Haiti.

Quote, “I would write down on a piece of paper things to girls that I liked, and that’s exactly how it was in ‘Check Yes or No’.  His song was that same story, and I loved it.”

His other favorites include Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”, Eric Church’s “Homeboy”, and the Zac Brown BandJimmy Buffett song “Knee Deep”.  He adds, quote,  “My friends are amazed that I love country music.  It’s not what most people expect.”

Ashley Monroe Says There’s a Pistol Annies Reunion “Brewing”

There’s something pretty special that happens when Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, andAngaleena Presley get the PISTOL ANNIES together.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen often enough.

But Ashley says that’s about to change.  Quote, “It’s definitely brewing.  We’ve been missing each other a lot.  We recently went on a run with Miranda and we all had chills every night.  We have a lot of song ideas going.  I feel like it’s soon.

She doesn’t know exactly when it’s going to happen, because that’s how they roll.  Quote, “The thing with us is we never want to force it.  If we’re too busy, then don’t force it, there’ll be a time when things let up a little bit, then we’ll make more music.”

Tim McGraw, Jimmy Fallon, and Lorne Michaels walked into a bar.  Seriously.  Tim says, quote, “[We] hung at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel one night.  We sat at the piano and played songs all night long.  Wasn’t long after that I did ‘Saturday Night Live’ and then was asked to do Jimmy Fallon’s first week.”  (Delicious Audio)
