Happy Birthday, Marines!

On this day in 1775 the United States Marine Corps was founded and I’m so grateful for that. I have several family members who served in the USMC and there are also several country artists who served.

George Jones – He was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps until his discharge in 1953. He was stationed in San Jose, California for his entire service.

Jamey Johnson – Johnson quit college after two years and served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for eight years. He served in Company L, 3rd Battalion 23rd Marines as a mortarman (MOS 0341) and attained the rank of corporal. He would often play original songs for his fellow Marines and has kept in contact with many of them. He wrote two songs on his initial self-released album that mention his Marine Corps service.

Josh Gracin – He attended Western Michigan University before he joined the United States Marine Corps. After basic training, he returned to marry his wife and was assigned to Camp Pendleton as a supply clerk. In 2003, Gracin auditioned for the second season of American Idol. He made it to the finals and eventually came in fourth place on the show. However, because of his earlier commitment to the Marine Corps, Gracin was not able to participate in the lucrative American Idol Finalists tour of American venues. Gracin was instead sent on a year tour as a recruiting tool, making appearances at special events around the United States to promote the United States Marine Corps. After completing his fourth year of service, he was honorably discharged in September 2004.

Thanks to all those who have served for our freedom. I greatly appreciate it. Happy Birthday, USMC and have a Happy Veterans Day!
