Did Keith Urban Misunderstand the Meaning of “Back Seat Freedom” in “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16”?
Song lyrics are like poetry in that they can mean different things to different people. Here’s a case where the fans had one take on a lyric, but the guy who recorded the song thought it meant something completely different.
We’re talking about the line”I’m a child of a backseat freedom” in KEITH URBAN’s “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16”. He didn’t write the song, and it sounds like he completely misunderstood what it was supposed to mean.
He explains, quote, “I’m a full blooded male but I interpreted that line as meaning, back before there were seatbelts. And that’s totally how I heard that line. It’s what it meant to me and made perfect sense in the context of the song.
“And then I started meeting people who were saying, ‘That’s a bit of a risqué line’ and I’m like, ‘What? No seatbelts?’ And they’re like, ‘No, no, that you were conceived in the back seat.’
“So, we’ve at least come to the conclusion that however you interpret that, it’s all to do with the lack of protection in the back seat.”
