The Death of Glenn Frey . . . the Country Connection
The death of GLENN FREY was felt pretty hard in the country community. The EAGLES have influenced a whole generation of performers, and you could argue that their sound is just as much country as rock.
In fact, they were nominated for CMA Vocal Group of the Year four different times: In 1976 and 1977 . . . and again in 2008 and 2009. They didn’t win any of those, but the tribute album “Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles” DID take home CMA Album of the Year in 1994.
One of the songs on that album was the TRAVIS TRITT cover of “Take It Easy”. He was able to get the Eagles together to be in the video . . . and some say that led to their eventual reunion.
Travis took the news pretty hard. He wrote, “I’m so shocked and saddened that Glenn Frey has died. He was always so nice to me. This is devastating.”
Here are a few more tributes:
BRAD PAISLEY Tweeted, “So saddened and shocked by the loss. Thank you for the music that paved the way for so many others.”
TIM MCGRAW wrote, “His music was personally inspirational, his impact immeasurable, his legacy timeless.”
TOBY KEITH Tweeted, “RIP Glenn Frey. Thank you for the songs and inspiration to so many. Missed by all.”
HILLARY SCOTT said, “One of LADY ANTEBELLUM’s biggest influences has always been the Eagles. Heartbroken to hear we lost another great music icon.”
CHASE BRYANT said, “My heart is saddened by the loss of one of the greatest. May you rest in peace, Glenn Frey.”
One last thing: You may remember that the Eagles couldn’t receive their Kennedy Center Honor last fall due to Glenn’s poor health. That’s when MIRANDA LAMBERT stepped in to do a very moving version of “Desperado“in their absence.
GRANGER SMITH didn’t want to write another song about “being heartbroken” or being “in love” . . . so he came up with “Backroad Song”. Quote, “It was just, ‘This is my back roads song. You find that road, the sun’s shining, suddenly everything feels good, you just want to turn up the stereo and go.'” (Delicious Audio)
Speaking of Granger Smith. He explains why he loves bringing his bow and arrow with him on the tour bus. Quote, “I’m desperately searching for things to get my mind off music. So, if I have ten minutes, I can shoot that bow a little bit, even if it’s in a city parking lot, and kinda get my mind off of it.” (Full Story)
If you didn’t have the money or the time to get down to Mexico this weekend for LUKE BRYAN’s “Crash My Playa” concert vacation . . . no worries. There will be others. He says, quote, “We’ve had a great time with [it], and odds are that’ll be something that you can count on us planning and doing every year.”
