Jean Shepard’s Husband Killed Man in Self-Defense, Authorities Say
The widower of Grand Ole Opry legend Jean Shepard will not face charges in the death of a man he shot and killed at his home near Nashville, authorities have announced.
79-year-old Benny Birchfield shot and killed 21-year-old Travis Sanders in the early morning hours on Saturday (Dec. 17), and according to Nashville’s Tennessean newspaper, police have concluded that he acted justifiably in self-defense.
Hendersonville Police Department Det. Sgt. Jim Vaughn tells the Tennessean that Birchfield has met with the Sumner County District Attorney’s Office and that no charges will be filed in the shooting.
Police responded to a call about a stabbing at Birchfield’s home in a Nashville suburb around 3AM Saturday morning and found him outside, suffering from stab wounds. Upon entering the home they found the body of Sanders, who was dead at the scene from five gunshot wounds from a .38 caliber handgun. They also found Birchfield’s grandaughter, 18-year-old Icie Sloan-Hawkins, who was suffering from stab wounds consistent with self-defense. She was transported to a hospital and died in transit.

TG Sheppard Hospitalized, Wife Asks for Prayers
Kelly Lang is asking for prayers for her husband, TG Sheppard, after he was hospitalized during a battle with pneumonia.
The singer posted to Facebook on Tuesday, (Dec. 20), writing, “If you don’t mind, say a little prayer for my sweet husband. He was checked into Vanderbilt hospital with pneumonia. I’m sure he’s in great hands but I want him home.”
The 72-year-old “Devil in a Bottle” has been hospitalized repeatedly in recent years. In 2012 he was placed in a critical care unit after suffering a bladder infection that caused his heart rate to skyrocket, and Lang kept fans apprised of his condition, asking for their prayers for the country legend over and over. After the worst had passed, she revealed Sheppard’ illness had been more serious than fans realized.
